The UK NHS Health Boards have seen a massive surge in the volume of data breach incidents in the past five years. This alarming figure was obtained by the Liberal Democrats through a FOI request and serves to underline the severity and sheer volume of data losses within the Health sector.
What’s even more worrying is that in 2009 their were 86 incidents but by 2013 this had risen to 223. This upward trend shows no sign of abating and no doubt 2014 will feature numerous high profile data losses. Commenting on this situation Philip McMichael, Operations Director, at DiskShred advised ” There is no silver bullet to this problem however a robust chain of custody for end-of-life data destruction can help reduce significantly the number and frequency of such incidents.”
